Sustainable energy systems expert Dr Giorgio Locatelli spoke at the World Nuclear Association (WNA) Symposium and will present at a conference held by The Nuclear Institute.

Dr Locatelli’s research focusses on the area of sustainable energy systems with a special interest on project management and competitiveness of power plants, particularly with regard to Small- Modular nuclear Reactors (SMR).

He recently published a detailed assessment of this new, smaller type of nuclear reactor; a scalable solution, suitable for a range of applications and sites.

The paper, published in the academic journal Progress in Nuclear Energy, was the single most downloaded paper in the journal in the period January to March 2014. For more information on the paper go to: http://www.lincoln.ac.uk/news/2014/03/860.asp

It aims to show to what extent this new type of nuclear reactor might provide a solution to fulfil future energy needs. It will help utilities and policymakers decide on the best way to meet the growing demand for energy.

Dr Locatelli was invited to speak at the WNA symposium in London for the working group on economics. It is the global nuclear industry’s premier event addressing the key issues of the nuclear industry and attracting an attendance of over 700 leaders and specialists from more than 30 countries.

The Symposium, which ran from 10th to 12th September, is drawing increased attention from non-industry professionals who recognise nuclear power’s central importance in securing our world’s energy and environmental future.

Dr Locatelli will also be providing an independent academic view at The Nuclear Institute’s Small Modular Reactor conference, which takes place in Manchester on 25th September, 2014.

Boasting top level speakers, policymakers and attracting senior delegates from across the industry, the one-day conference will focus on the opportunities and challenges SMRs offer.

Active participation from industry and academia will focus on a range of areas, including design and operation, the implications for Britain’s decarbonisation commitments, manufacturing and UK jobs.

Policymakers and industry leaders will also present HMG and Nuclear Innovation and Research Advisory Board’s feasibility study on SMRs.

Dr Locatelli is also presenting at the Modular Construction and Prefabrication Summit for Oil and Gas from 15th to 17th September in Amsterdam.
